$10 million gift launches capital campaign for Carle: Mills Breast Cancer
Institute to benefit women of east central Illinois
Officials from Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, Ill., announced a $10
million gift from Linda and Doug Mills to develop the Mills Breast Cancer
Institute, a world-class center dedicated to breast cancer treatment and
research. Ms. Mills, a breast cancer survivor, is currently being treated for a
recurrence of the disease first diagnosed in 1991.
“Amazing new breakthroughs in breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and research
are giving women a huge variety of options in dealing with the challenges of
this dreaded disease,” Ms. Mills noted. “Women can now enter treatment with the
feeling they have a full life ahead of them.”
The Institute will include clinical services provided by Carle Clinic
Association physicians and research conducted in partnership with the University
of Illinois. Opening in spring 2008, the Institute will be built on the Carle
Foundation Hospital medical campus.
“Linda and Doug are first-hand witnesses to the substantial impact breast
cancer can have on an individual and a community,” explained James C. Leonard,
M.D., president and CEO for The Carle Foundation. “We are so honored that they
selected Carle and that Carle will have an opportunity to better meet the needs
of area women dealing with breast cancer.”
The Mills gift allows Carle Foundation Hospital to break ground and
accelerates the nearly $30 million breast cancer institute project. Additional
monies are being sought from federal and state resources as well as through
Carle’s New Heights capital campaign, a $25 million campaign for programs
and initiatives within Carle and its communities. The Mills gift brings the
total raised to more than $16 million to date.
About to celebrate its 75th
anniversary, the 295-bed Carle Foundation Hospital is an integral part of The
Carle Foundation, a not-for-profit, locally owned and operated health care
system.
