The Program

The Advanced Educational Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Carle is a fully accredited 4-year program approved by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association. The Carle OMFS Residency Program participates in the PASS application program and Match to allow one new resident to enter the program each year. Candidates who complete the program are eligible for examination by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. This advanced education program incorporates all requirements necessary to attain board eligibility in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Carle Physician Group is a multi-specialty group practice with more than 320 physicians practicing in more than 50 specialties and subspecialties. With 13 branch clinics in surrounding communities, Carle Physician Group meets the healthcare needs of east central Illinois. The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery outpatient unit operates fives days/week and sees nearly 15,000 patient visits annually, with over 1750 IV sedations and General Anesthetics administered for over 3750 procedures/year.

Carle Foundation Hospital is a not-for-profit 315-bed regional care hospital located in Urbana, Illinois. It is the primary teaching hospital for the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana Champaign. It is the area’s only Level I Trauma Center and Level III Peri-natal Service.

Facilities

Residents obtain the majority of their educational experience at Carle. Carle Physician Group is one of the largest private physician group practices in the country and the second largest outpatient facility in Illinois with 320 physicians practicing more than 50 medical and surgical specialties and sub-specialties. The Clinic serves the needs of more than one million patients in 42 east central Illinois and western Indiana counties. To meet the needs of this diverse population, the Carle Physician Group works closely with Carle Foundation Hospital, a 315-bed tertiary care facility and Level I Trauma Center with a full range of ancillary and support services.

Carle Foundation Hospital is the primary teaching hospital for the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign. In addition to a 24-hour Emergency Department and complete range of therapy services, the Hospital features surgical, cardiovascular and neonatal intensive care units. Carle Foundation Hospital is designated as one of seven Illinois Co-Perinatal Centers for the care of high-risk mothers and babies and also serves as the region’s only Level I Trauma Center. The Hospital is a leader in management of outpatient surgical procedures and opened its first of two free-standing ambulatory surgery and recovery centers in 1996.

The Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery operates a daily outpatient clinic within Carle Physician Group. The clinic is fully equipped and staffed to perform IV sedation, Monitored Anesthesia Care, and full General Anesthetics. Additionally, a second fully operational outpatient clinic, with identical capabilities, is operated off-site in Champaign.

The Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is in the Main Operating Room 3 days/week, Tuesday through Thursday. Additional Main Operating Room time is utilized as required.
