More ROOM FOR HEALING:

A $48.7 million expansion and renovation project at Carle Foundation Hospital that will meet the region's growing healthcare needs well into the future in now complete. Called Building for Better Care, from start to finish, it was the most significant construction project at Carle in nearly twenty years.

Components of the building project include:

- Expanded and renovated Emergency Department
- Five-story addition to the North Tower
- Expansion and renovation of surgical space
- New 3-story building for expanded surgical space and waiting rooms

With the 5-story addition, the North Tower is 11 stories high and the tallest building in Urbana. There is enlarged and updated space for obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and neonatal care as well as general medical-surgical beds.

Key features of the new space:

  • Private OB rooms for all moms
  • Family space
  • State-of-the-art Neonatal ICU
  • Kid-friendly Pediatrics floor
  • More comfortable patient environment
  • More space for updated infrastructure and high-tech medical care
  • More space for caregivers

Another component of Building for Better Care is a three-level structure that was built on the west side of the North Tower, allowing for expansion of the hospital’s surgical area.  Support space will be created to better accommodate patients in post-recovery care and to enlarge waiting and consultation areas for family members.

Internal expansion and renovation of the Carle Emergency Department was finished in 2005 and includes a new waiting room, 12 additional examining rooms plus two pediatric-specific rooms, and an enlarged trauma room.
