Research and Clinical Trials
The Carle Cancer Centers Prevention and Research
Department
The Carle Cancer Center has participated in cancer research for
over 20 years, and in 1983, was one of the first community cancer facilities in the United
States to be designated as a Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP). Through this
designation, the Carle Cancer Center is linked directly with the National Cancer
Institutes research endeavors.
The Carle Cancer Centers primary research affiliation is with the North Central
Cancer Treatment Group (NCCTG), which is directly affiliated with and headed by the Mayo
Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In addition to NCCTG, the Carle Cancer Center participates
in other research programs including the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), the
oldest and largest clinical trials group in the country, and the National Surgical
Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), which has developed innovative treatments in
breast cancer therapy.
Currently, the Carle Cancer Center is participating in over 125 research projects
including national studies aimed at developing therapies to aid in cancer prevention,
especially in breast, prostate, lung and colon cancers.
