Are You a Candidate for Bariatric Surgery?

Obesity (overweight) is measured by a formula called body mass index (BMI).  A healthy BMI is about 18 to 25.  BMI and other criteria will be considered before the decision about surgery is made.

Criteria for Bariatric Surgery

  • Number of pounds over ideal body weight (approx. 100 pounds overweight for men, 80 pounds for women)
  • BMI of 40 or more
  • BMI of 35-39 with severe co-morbidities
  • Previous unsuccessful attempts at weight loss, including medically supervised diets, etc.
  • Age 18-60
  • Willingness to make lifestyle changes and eating habits
  • Commitment to behavior modification, support groups, long-term follow up

If you qualify for bariatric surgery, you need to think about the risks and complications of this type of surgery.  You need to be willing to change your eating habits, exercise habits and your general lifestyle for the rest of your life.  Your need to be prepared for changes in your body as well.
